Although you, as a non-working spouse, have not worked to earn sufficient credits to be eligible for your own social security benefits, you are eligible for spousal benefits that are 50 percent of the working spouse's full benefit. Benefits paid to a non-working spouse will not decrease the retirement benefit of the working spouse (your husband).
You, as a non-working spouses qualify for social security benefits if you are married to your spouse still, OR divorced from the spouse but were married for at least 10 years.
Social Security benefits will be paid to you once the working spouse begins to receive benefits. The normal benefit age for a working spouse is 66, but can happen earlier if the working spouse decides to retire early and begins to receive retirement benefits as early as age 62.
However, as you are not a US citizen/ US resident, your eligibility to receive social security benefits depends on which country you are a citizen of.The Social Security Administration is required to withhold nonresident alien tax from the monthly Retirement, Disability or Survivor benefits of anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident (according to the Internal Revenue Service’s definition). Residents of certain countries may meet an exemption or reduction of this tax.
