According to the IRS website, this is known as a Letter 608C,Dishonored Check Penalty. The IRS doesn't try to cash the check again, but sometimes the clearinghouse will try to cash it a second time. Be sure to contact your bank to find out its policies on bounced checks. Don't count on the IRS overlooking the bounced check. It's a safe bet you'll be hearing from the agency. But since you quickly put another check in the mail to cover the bad one, the agency may well decide that your intent was good and let you off without a fine. If not, it'll basically be like you never sent the check to the IRS. If that means your payment is late, there will be interest and probably penalties, not huge though. If you write a check to pay your taxes and the check bounces, the IRS may impose a penalty. The penalty is either 2 percent of the amount of the check Unless the check is under $1,250, in which case the penalty is the amount of the check or $25, whichever is less. Checks Up to $24.99;For bounced checks in amounts less than $25, the IRS penalty equals the amount of the check. Checks of $25 to $1,249.99;For bounced checks in amounts from $25 to $1,249.99, the penalty is $25. Checks of $1,250 or More; For bounced checks of $1,250 or more, the penalty equals two percent of the check amount.
