there are a couple of secure ways (encrypted connection) to do this.  One is setting up your  home workstation as vpn server (yes, it's possible to set up xp machines as vpn servers) and use remote desktop access to connect.

but above method requires too many steps though - opening your firewall for certain ports for vpn passthru, etc. 
the second method is to install "logmein" software.  it's free.  simply go to www.logmein.com and follow the instructions.
