Below are two small stories (it's important you read both, as they are related) that show how, many times, the impact of conversion can go beyond our dreams.

STORY - I

We all know about Al Capone. The notorious gangster, mafia who virtually owned Chicago. 

He was a crime boss who lorded over the windy city dealing with all sort of crimes prostitution to murder to ...you name it...and he escaped the law for many many years. 

It was because of one man his -lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie."  Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.

To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well.  For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day.. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block.

Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly.  And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie tried to teach him right from wrong. 

Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son- he couldn't pass on a Good Name or a Good Example.

One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. It's believed Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done.  So he decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some semblance of integrity. 

To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great.  Nevertheless, he testified.

Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. 

Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a religious symbol and medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine.

The Poem read:

"The clock of life is wound but once, 

and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. 

Now is the only time you own. 

Live, love, toil with a will. 

Place no faith in time. 

For the clock may soon be still."

STORY - II

World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Cdr Butch O'Hare. 

He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific.

One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank.

He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. 

Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet.  As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet.

The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. 

There was only one thing to do, only thing he'd learned growing up. He must somehow divert them from the fleet.

Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent.  Undaunted and alone, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly.

Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction.  Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier.

Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft.

This took place on February 20, 1942 , and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honor.

A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man.  So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2.

이야기 - 1

우리 모두 알 카폰에 대해 알고 있다. 악명 높은 갱스터, 사실상 시카고를 소유했던 마피아.

그는 바람 차가운 도시를, 모든 종류의 범죄로, 매춘에서 살해까지 있는 범죄는 다 다루며 도시를 지배했던 범죄 상사였는데...  그는 오래, 오랜 세월 법을 피했었다.

그것은  "살살이 에디"라고 별명 붙었던 한 법사 덕이었다. 에디는 아주 잘 해냈다! 사실, 법을 잘 둘러댄 에디의 술책으로 대포: 알은 오랫동안 감옥밖에 있을 수 있었다.

그의 고마움을 보여주기 위해 카폰은 보상을 무척 잘해 주었다. 준 돈이 컷었을 뿐만 아니라 에디는 특별 배당금도 받았다. 예를 들어, 그와 그의 가족은 같이 사는 도움이와 그 당시에 누릴 수 있는 온갖 편리함이 가추어 진 울타리가있는 저택에 살았다. 그 저택은 크다 보니 시카고 도시 한 구역을 차지하고 있었다.

에디는 한 약점이 있긴 있었다. 그는 아들이 하나 있었는 데 끔찍이 아들을 사랑했다. 그래서 자신이 조직범죄에 개입하고 있었지만 에지는 아들에게 옳고 그름을 가르치려 했다.

에디는 자기 아들이 자기보다 더 나은 사람이 되기를 원했다. 그러나 그의 부와 영향력 때문에 그는 아들에게 줄 수 없는 두 가지가 있었다. 그는 좋은 이름이나 좋은 모범을 전해 줄 수 없었다.

어느 날 살살이 에지는 어려운 결정을 했다. 살살이 에디는 자신이 저질은 잘못들을 바로잡기를 원했다. 그래서 그는 당국에 가서 알 "무서운 얼굴" 카폰에 대해 진실을 밝히고 그의 욕된 이름을 바로 잡고 아들에게 어느정도 성실함의 모범을 보여 주려 마먹었다.

그러기 위해서 그는 마피아를 상대로 증언해야 할 것이며 그러면 치러야 하는 비용이 클 것을 잘 알았다. 그런데도 그는 증언했다.

일 년 내에 살살이 에디는 고적한 시카고 거리에서 총격 세례를 받고 삶의 끝을 맺었다. 그러나 그가 생각하기에는 그는 아들에게 그가 줄 수 있는 최고의 선물을 그가 지불할 수 있는 최대의 가격을 지급하여 제공했다.

경찰은 그의 주머니에서 묵주, 종교적 패물과 메달, 그리고 잡지에서 떼어 낸 시 한 편을 거두었다.

시는 이랬다 :

"인생의 시계는 감아지지만 오직 한 번 만이며,

그 누구도 시계 바눌이 언제 멎을지, 오랜 후일지, 이른 시간 안에 멎을지 아는 능력 가진 사람 하나도 없다.

지금이 그대가 가진 유일한 시간이다.

살고, 사랑하고, 의지대로 애쓰라.

시간에 믿음 두지 마라.

시계는 곧 멈출지도 모르니까. "

이야기 - II

2차 세계 대전은 많은 영웅을 배출했다. 그중 한 명은 부치 오헤어 중위였다.

그는 남태평양의 항공 모함 렉싱턴에 배치된 전투기 조종사였다.

어느 날 그의 전체 비행 중대가 한 임무를 수행하게 띄어 졌다. 그가 공중에 올랐을 때, 그는 연료 게이지를 보고 누군가가 연료 탱크를 채우는 것을 잊었다는 사실을 알게 되었다.

그는 임무를 완수하고 그의 모함으로 돌아갈 충분한 연료가 없을 것이다. 그의 편대장을 그를 보고 항공모함으로 돌아가라고 명했다.

마지 못해, 그는 비행대형에서 벗어나 항공모함에로 향했다. 그가 모선으로 돌아갈 때, 그는 무언가 그의 피를 오싹하게 만드는 것을 보았다. 일본 항공기 비행 중대가 미국 함대로 속도를 내어 비행하고 있었다.

미국 전투기들은 다들 출격한 상태 였고, 함대는 전혀 무방비 상태였다. 그는 함대를 구하기 위해 비행 중대에 가서 알려 그들이 돌아가게 경고할 수도 없었다.

할 일은 자라면서 배웠던 것대로 오직 한 가지뿐이었다. 그는 어떻게 해서든지 일본기들을 항공모함에서 관심을 돌려보내야 했다.

자신의 안전은 무도 제쳐 놓고 그는 일본 비행기 대형으로 날아들어 갔다. 날개에 장착된 50 구경은 그가 놀란 적의 비행기들을 공격하고 또 공격할 때 발광했다. 부치는 지금 흩어진 대형에서 안팎으로 움직였고 모든 탄약이 마침내 다 소비될 때까지 최대한 많은 비행기에 발사했다. 겁먹지 않고 혼자서, 그는 폭행을 계속했다. 그는 가능한 한 많은 적기를 혜손시키기 위해 날개 또는 꼬리를 자르려고 비행기에 뛰어들었고 비행을 하지 못하게 했다.

마지막으로 분노한 일본 비행 대대가 다른 방향으로 날아갔다. 크게 안심한 부치 오 헤어 (Butch O'Hare)와 그의 너덜너덜 한 전투기가 항공모함에 느릿느릿 내렸다

도착하자마자, 그는 자신이 돌아오게 된 상황과 일어난 사건을 보고했다. 그의 비행기에 장착된 총기 카메라가 찍은 영상은 이야기를 그대로 전했다. 부치가 그의 모함 대를 보호하려고 과감히 시도한 모든 정도를 보여주었다. 그는 실로 적 항공기 5대를 파괴했었다.

이것은 1942년 2월 20일에 일어났고 그 행적으로 부치는 해군 최초의 이차대전 고수 에이스 (Ace of W.W.II)가 되었고, 최초의 해군 비행사 (Naval Aviator)라는 훈장을 수여 받았다.

1 년 후 부치는 29세의 나이에 공중전에서 사망했다. 그의 고향은 이 이차대전 주인공의 추억이 사라지지 않도록 시카고의 오 헤어 공항은 그의 이 위대한 용기를 기리기위해 이름져 졌다. 그러니 다음에 오 헤어 국제 공항에 가실 기회가 되면 그의 동상과 명예 훈장이 전시되어 있는 부치 기념관을 방문해 보실 생각해 보시기를.... 기념관은 공항 터미널 1과 터미널 2 사이에 있다.
